The Japanese government is using Tokyo Revengers to spread awareness about Japan’s new age of majority laws. Television and web commercials featuring the characters from Tokyo Revengers started to appear from January 7, 2022. The campaign is to avoid any issues that may arise due to certain consumers or stores not knowing this change. [Thanks, Dengeki!]
From April 1, 2022, the age of majority in Japan will change from 20 to 18. This means that starting in April, 18-year-olds will be able to vote and sign contracts. This change is to allow Japan’s youth to engage in politics from an earlier age. This is also due to more countries around the world having age of majority set to 18. However, this change will not affect alcohol, tobacco, or gambling. You will still have to be at least 20 years old to participate in those activities in Japan.
As for why the Japanese government is using Tokyo Revengers to spread the news about the age of majority? It’s due to the series’ themes of maturing and growing up. Tokyo Revengers follows the story of Takemichi, who learns one day that his ex-girlfriend and her brother were killed by a gang. He then travels back in time again and again in order to try and save them. According to the article, the campaign is to encourage Japan’s youth to, like Takemichi, not give up. It is also to encourage active social participation.
The new age of majority law will go into place in Japan from April 1, 2022. Tokyo Revengers is readily available on streaming services such as Crunchyroll.
