Tetris (And its theme song) are world-renowned, and while Tetris is a classic, it is a pretty tough game to iterate on.  The folks over at Sega, however, are giving it a shot with crossover title, Puyo Puyo Tetris.

The action puzzle game combines Tetris and Sega’s own series, Puyo Puyo in a showdown crossover that will allow players to choose which version of frantic tile (or blob) dropping to play with or against. Characters from the Puyo Puyo series such as Andou Ringo will also make a return.

It should be interesting to see each side’s advantages and disadvantages stack up when faced off against one another. Tetris looks to have smaller blocks, allowing for more room to score big and escape mistakes (or foes dropping dead tiles after their own combos) while Puyo Puyo has the advantage of letting players score in more and larger quantities should their blobs line up.

Another mode that’s hinted at will have players playing both block breakers at once – Halfway through a face-off on Tetris, the video shows the game swapping screens for both players to continue a round of Puyo Puyo instead.

More details will be announced at Tokyo Game Show later this month. Puyo Puyo Tetris is slated for a 2014 release on Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PlayStation Vita.
