It isn’t always obvious how to do things in games. Like if someone never played a Story of Seasons game before, they wouldn’t know they’d need to find the Blue Feather to get hitched. So while my priority when playing Fae Farm for the review was to beat the game, make sure it was working, and then maybe when I was done go back and offer some assistance at and after launch if it seemed necessary. Considering romance was an feature billed as included ahead of launch, I expected more from it and was disappointed. However, I was even more shocked when it came to actually getting married, as it is completely broken in my Switch version of the game.
I was going through the motions, trying to figure out how to get married and what it would entail. Nhamashal liked polished gems a whole bunch, which are an item I was consistently farming to build up a fortune, so I figured try maxing out a relationship with the character. I did! It was easy! I got Nhamashal to the “Getting Serious” phase. At this point, since I was done with the game, I went ahead and just kept going to bed, waking up, doing the generic “romance” quests, and giving polished gems every day.
Finally, the moment arrived. Suddenly the status changed and… Nhamashal was listed as my spouse.
It was an anticlimactic moment. So much so that I thought I missed something. I spent a few days in-game, waiting to see if another quest came up. I spent an in-game week checking in with Nhamashal in town. (My new spouse hadn’t moved in with me.) I checked the menu. (Yup, there’s a ring next to the name. We’re hitched.) I talked with some major NPCs like the Mayor and Wisp Mother. (Nobody had anything to say.)
Clearly, the game is registering that we are in a committed relationship. When I go to the inn, where my apparent spouse still lives, the NPC professes adoration for me. Not to me though, apparently, because Nhamashal isn’t registering that I am to the right and not the left.
So yeah! I looked up online, and this is apparently not how a Fae Farm marriage is supposed to go down. Supposedly there’s a whole fiancé phase and a quest that involves paying 10,000 Florins for a ceremony. But again, I didn’t see that and can’t vouch for that, because my Switch version of the game decided things like an actual wedding and living together isn’t a priority.
While I can’t tell you how the marriage system works in Fae Farm, I can tell you how to get “divorced” so you can be ready for when Phoenix Labs hopefully fixes this thing. In the Relationships menu, head to the column on the right that says Romance. Select a character. At the bottom of the screen, it will say you can press a button to “Reset a Relationship.” Choosing this brings up a warning that this will sever all ties to that person and reset the values to zero. Do that and you’ll be able to go through it all again.
Maybe by the time you get the person you pick up to “Getting Serious” again, Fae Farm will be patched and marriage will actually be an option!
Fae Farm is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC.
