Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. announced a major shake-up to its European operations, including the cancellation of the upcoming extraction shooter Hyenas. The company cited an economic downturn in Europe as a reason for the cancellation and expects to take a loss of 14.3 billion Yen this fiscal year.
The announcement came as part of a plan to implement structural reforms in its consumer area with a focus on European operations. As well as Hyenas, a number of unannounced projects developed in Europe have also been canceled. You can read the entire notice here and the Hyenas shut-down statement below:
Hyenas was an ‘Escape from Tarkov-like’ title that had just finished a period of closed beta testing, though it is unknown whether the beta’s reception was influential on the decision to cancel it. It was under development by Creative Assembly, a UK outfit best known for the Total War series as well as the 2014 horror game Alien: Isolation. Shortly after the cancellation announcement, Creative Assembly posted a statement to Twitter warning of impending redundancies.
The Sega statement goes on to assert that its other businesses, like amusement machines and toy sales, are performing well in the company’s full-year consolidated forecast. It is unknown how the restructuring will affect the company’s other holdings, such as fellow Two Point Studios or the French developer Amplitude.
Sega’s other gaming projects are continuing full steam ahead, with returning characters headed to Like A Dragon Gaiden and Vtuber Inugami Korone set to appear at the Sonic Square Collection Event.
Hyenas was going to launch for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S but is no longer under development.
