Starfield is all about taking into the skies above and exploring the deepest corners of the galaxy, including its more than 1000 explorable planets. To do that, though, you’ll need to make use of the Star Map, which is one of the key features aboard the Frontier and any other ship you get in the game. So here’s how to use that Star Map to get around Starfield.
How to Unlock and Use the Starfield Star Map
First and foremost, you need to unlock the Starfield Star Map before you can make proper use of it. To do this, all you need to do is continue the prologue until you reach the point where Barrett gives you his ship to set off for New Atlantis.
At this point, you can use the Star Map, but not entirely. I recommend heading to New Atlantis and continuing the main story there by speaking with Sarah at the Constellation Lodge. After reaching this point, you’ll get a new objective to head to Mars in the main story.
From this point forward, you should be able to go to most feasible places using the Star Map. To do this, you can pull up the main menu in pretty much any outdoor location you are at. You can either jump to your ship or immediately plot a course for a new star system.
On the other hand, you can manually board your ship and find the Star Map across from your bed in Starfield. The Star Map itself shows you the planet you’re on, but you can back out to see the star system, and then back out again to see the entire galaxy.
You can plot a course for many systems and head directly to a specific planet you want to visit. However, to do this, you need to ensure your ship is properly fixed and has enough fuel to reach there. If you can’t reach a system with your current fuel supply, you may need to refuel or consider a better ship.
Starfield is available on the Xbox Series X and PC.
