One of the most limited factors of Final Fantasy XIV in terms of gear customization was the single-dye use in the past. You could basically only color armor and clothing all red, all black, and so on, with little to no room for other colors. But that all changed with the new two-dye system available in FFXIV Dawntrail and 7.0.
How does the two-dye system works in FFXIV Dawntrail and 7.0?
How this new two-dye system works is with the launch of FFXIV Dawntrail and 7.0, players can now use up to two dyes on certain gear items. When you go to dye an item, you’ll see the new screen. Here, it shows “Dye 1” and “Dye 2” for the particular item in question.
Dye 1 is generally considered the “main” color for the particular outfit. In the case of a suit jacket, for instance, Dye 1 might be the outer layer of the suit, which is the main part players look at. On the other hand, Dye 2 is more of the accent part. In the same suit example, it could be a sash, tie, or vest underneath.
You can pick whatever color combination you want for these two dyes. This allows far greater freedom in how gear will look, letting players further set themselves apart from others. Just know that not all gear currently allows two dyes, but Square Enix is working on adding compatibility to other pieces in the future.
How do I get more dye in FFXIV?
With the great changes to the dye system in FFXIV 7.0 and Dawntrail, you might want to, understandably, start changing your glamours right now. For that, though, you’ll need some dye. You can craft some dyes as a crafting class. This can oftentimes be much cheaper than the alternative.
However, if you are pressed for time and don’t mind spending the extra Gil, you can buy dye instantly off of the Market Board. That said, prices are steadily going up, especially for Metallic Dyes, due to the recent changes, so beware of that.
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail is available right now for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
