How to use the Catalyst and get Harmonized Silk in WoW The War Within

The Catalyst is a system that has just unlocked for Season 1 of WoW: The War Within, that provides a way to turn regular gear into a Set Piece. Here’s how to use it, as well as how to get the Harmonized Silk it needs to run, in World of Warcraft: The War Within.

How to Find and Use the Catalyst in WoW The War Within

Finding the Catalyst is easy, in fact you’ll be guided to it by not one but two quests marked with purple ‘important’ symbols. One of these will enable access to the catalyst itself, while the other is simply an introduction to the Spark of Omens material. It’s also marked by a small, golden star symbol on your minimap. Using the Catalyst is as simple as clicking on it, which brings up the menu that allows you to select a piece of gear to turn into a Set Piece as long as it is at least Veteran level (gear that drops at around 584 item level) and not a piece of crafted equipment. While you can upgrade many types of gear, only gear belonging to the Head, Shoulder, Chest, Legs, and Hand slots can have set bonuses. Other pieces may still be upgraded, but you may find that it will only shift some stats around and maybe unlock the relevant transmog appearance. We recommend not doing that as uses are limited by how much Harmonized Silk you have, as detailed in the next section.

How to Get Harmonized Silk in WoW The War Within

The Catalyst in WoW The War Within runs on a resource called Harmonized Silk, though the tooltip neglects to say how this is obtained. The good news is you’ll obtain this item automatically, the bad news is this only occurs every two weeks, stacking up to 8 charges. This means you won’t be relying on the Catalyst to get Set gear, rather you’ll want to use it to get the last few pieces after (hopefully) getting the rest from the raid. Unless of course you’re a non-raider, in which case this will likely be your only way to obtain Set Pieces.
