How to Unlock the Chainsaw in Silent Hill 2 Remake

If you’ve played the original Silent Hill, then you probably already know how to obtain this extremely powerful weapon. If not, well, you’ll need to beat Silent Hill 2 remake on any difficulty at least once. The weapon won’t immediately appear in your inventory and can be missed. I would know because my first fresh run of New Game+ I walked completely past it. That’s probably because I had my speedrun brain on.

Once you’ve selected NG+ from the New Game option, head in the direction of Silent Hill as per usual. Past the well with the first save point you’ll head in the direction of the cemetery, which will lead you to the lumberyard. Before you enter the building to get the key and unlock the gate that will lead you to Silent Hill, a chainsaw will be embedded in some logs.

It’s honestly pretty loud, so I don’t know how I missed it. Approach it and you’ll be given a prompt. This will allow you to pull it out of the log and add it to the list of items you can equip. Keep in mind that this weapon is very noisy, if not extremely effective. So you might miss certain sound cues if you decide to lug this thing around with you.

Additionally, when you get your other melee weapons back, like the plank and the pipe, you will need to reequip your chainsaw. And, of course, the little Texas Chainsaw Massacre Easter egg is still in the game. Which means James will periodically lift the chainsaw about his head and wave it about while shouting. This makes it a less than idea weapon for speedrunning unless if you can swap your weapons in your inventory in seconds. Because it does kill most enemies in one hit.

The Silent Hill 2 remake is available for PC and PlayStation 5.
