How to Unlock John Morris in Vampire Survivors Ode to Castlevania

John Morris (not to be confused with Jonathan) is a tricky character to unlock in the Vampire Survivors Ode to Castlevania DLC, as it requires unlocking four evolutions. Here’s how to find and evolve all of the required weapons.

In Vampire Survivors, John Morris is unlocked once Raging Fire, Ice Fang, Gale Force, and Rock Riot have evolved at least once. Thanfully, this doesn’t need to be all in the same run. Evolution methods for the required weapons are as follows:

  • Raging Fire (Max) + Spinach (Max) = Salamender [Charlotte starting weapon]
  • Rock Riot (Max) + Stone Mask (Max) = Gemma Torpor
  • Ice Fang (Max) + Spellbinder (Max) = Cocytus
  • Gale Force (Max) + Bracer (Max) = Pneuma Tempestas

How to get Raging Fire

Raging Fire is the starting weapon of Charlotte Aulin, who’s unlocked by finding seven Mirror of Truth stage items. Mirror of Truth only appears after opening the Capra Gate once and, believe it or not, looks like a mirror.

I found that the easiest way to get Mirrors of Truth is to use VIII — Mad Groove to pull them straight toward you every two minutes. If you don’t have this Arcana, use the map regularly to check when one is nearby.

Instead of heading east or into the church at the start of an Ode to Castlevania run, head as far north as possible. Once you reach a large red sigil, step on it and defeat Behemoth, who drops Rock Riot.

Teleport to the Capra Gate and travel south to the red skull marked on the map. Stand on the sigil to summon Crab (better known as Brachyura to Castlevania fans), then defeat it to pick up Ice Fang. Alternatively, you can use Sypha, whose starting weapon is Ice Fang.

How to get Gale Force

Defeat Zephyr on the path to the clock tower to obtain Gale Force. Zephyr is the first boss on the long path after the Capra Gate’s maze.

Passive BonusGains an extra Arcana VII — Iron Blue Will at level 10. Can find special pickups and spawns Mirrors of Truth every 5 levels.
Weapon EvolutionIron Ball (max) + Armor = Wrecking Ball

John Morris’ starting weapon is Iron Ball, which evolves into Wrecking Ball at max level while holding Armor. Getting Iron Ball to Level Four also unlocks the weapon for all characters. It may have taken a lot of work to unlock John, but it means you’re a big step closer to Richter Belmont.

Vampire Survivors and the Ode to Castlevania DLC are available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices.
