How to Recruit Gilbert in Unicorn Overlord

As you go through Drakenhold in Unicorn Overlord with Alain, you’ll meet Prince Gilbert and, yes, even get the chance to recruit him. However, there’s a catch. Getting him in your party means agreeing to talk to someone before a certain battle so that person will talk to Gilbert after the fight.

How do I recruit Prince Gilbert in Unicorn Overlord?

Editor’s Note: There will be Unicorn Overlord spoilers below.

So first, you need to make sure you recruit another character if you want to add Gilbert to your army in Unicorn Overlord. Aramis, who can join the group in the Drakenhold Main Quest “The General in Black,” needs to be on your side. If you didn’t convince him to join, you won’t get Gilbert on your side.

From there, play through the game for a while. You need to reach the Drakenhold region Main Quest “Heir to the Dragonlands” to trigger the next steps in this process. Rather than approaching the battle from the south, head to the east and follow the road to rendezvous with Gilbert at the fort at Virginia’s suggestion. After you reunite with the prince at the fortress and start the quest, you’ll see an event segment with Virginia.

Virginia will reveal that Aramis is actually Gilbert’s older brother Ludwig, her former betrothed, and the oldest prince of the Drakenhold royal family. She asks you to convince Aramis/Ludwig to reveal himself to his brother. This is the critical decision. If you want Gilbert to eventually join your army, you must select, “Agree to speak with him.”

From there, go through the battle as you normally would. Upon winning, you’ll see a special scene involving Gilbert and his brother, Aramis. Aramis will explain himself and voice his support for Gilbert. Gilbert will then say he’s determined to join the Liberation Army and does after you get back to the overworld map.

Gilbert belongs to the Prince class. He arrives equipped with a Royal Saber, Detoxifying Amulet, and Quenching Amulet.

If you choose to not have Alain get involved or Aramis is not around, then a different ending scene appears. In that one, Gilbert laments the fact that Ludwig isn’t there. He’ll then say his commitment is to his kingdom as its new king and won’t join your army.

Unicorn Overlord is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X
