While some characters are a bit more difficult to find in Star Ocean The Second Story R, like Opera and Ernest, it is pretty easy to recruit Ashton. After you hit a certain point in the story, there’s an obvious hint to go to the place where you’ll meet him.
How do I recruit Ashton in Star Ocean The Second Story?
First, you need to advance the main campaign until you’ve both visited Kurik and seen its not an option to leave Krosse continent and need to help Marze out with its situation. When you do, you’ll be told Harley is your next stop for heading to the next continent. Once you enter this port town, you’ll see two people right next to the entrance talking about a two-headed dragon in Salva. It’s in the mines, and the folks there put out a call for help. Given Rena’s relationship with Allen and the town, there are some pretty strong context clues to head back.
Use the fast travel function to teleport back to Salva. Then, head into the mines at the northern part of town, right next to Allen’s mansion. A soldier will be inside, and a scripted event will take place. While he’ll initially bar you from entering, he’ll give in and let you through. He’ll also mention another warrior is inside and suggests working together to beat the dragon.
From there, you need to head to the northeast. This area was previous inaccessible during previous visits to Salva Mines. I drew on the screenshot on the map below to show the most efficient path to reach Ashton. As you follow it, you’ll actually catch a glimpse of him before you properly meet.
While the enemies here are a bit difficult and you’ll see a save spot ahead of where you’ll meet Ashton, don’t worry. There’s no boss fight ahead. Just go to the point, and an automatic event will transpire. When all is said and done, Ashton will ask if you’ll take responsibility for what happened. If you agree to, then he’ll join your party.
Star Ocean The Second Story R is on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC. The game can also immediately be found on the PlayStation and PSP worldwide and the PS3, PS4, and Vita in Japan.
