Best way to Pressure a Thunderclaw in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

If you are trying to complete the Grasslands Fiend Intel in FF7 Rebirth, you may find yourself stuck when facing off against Thunderclaw. During Fiend Intel 6: Voltaic Canine, you have to battle the electrified Grasslands wolf. The only problem is, Thunderclaw has no weakness in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. So, how do you Pressure it?

To Pressure Thunderclaw in FF7 Rebirth, you need to use Red XIII basic attack and then select the “Bio” spell with Poison Materia equipped. The non-elemental damage is what is needed to help trigger the Pressure objective. Below are the full steps you need to take to pressure Thunderclaw:

  • Pause your game and select the “Equipment & Materia” menu.
  • Equip “Poison Materia” on Red XIII.
  • Start Fiend Intel 6: Voltaic Canine in the Grasslands, and immediately have Red XIII spam his basic attack.
  • As soon as Red XIII’s ATB meter is filled, immediately press “X” to pause combat. Next, click the “Spells” menu and select “Bio”.
  • Have Red XIII use Bio on Thunderclaw.
  • After the spell has landed, immediately spam Red XIII’s basic attacks on the Thunderclaw until it becomes pressured.

The toxin spell will apply a steady rate of non-elemental damage, and the Thunderclaw will become Pressured when paired with Red XIII’s relentless basic attacks.

How to complete Grasslands Fiend Intel 6: Voltaic Canine in FF7 Rebirth

The first step is the trickiest, as you may need to progress to Chapter 4: Dawn of a New Era before you can do it. That is because you will need a Poison Materia. If you haven’t found one in the overworld, then you must progress the story until you visit Under Junon. Specifically, the item vendor in Under Junon will sell you Poison Materia for 1,500 Gil. Don’t worry, though, as you can return to the Grasslands at any time to finish the Fiend Intel objective.

You can find the location where to get Poison Materia on the map below:

After you obtain the Poison Materia, pause your game and click the “Equipment & Materia” menu. Once here, press the “Triangle” button to equip the Poison Materia to an empty slot on Red XIII’s weapon or accessory slot. You can technically equip the materia on any character in your party. However, Red XIII makes the most sense, as we’ll be using his attack.

Walk up to the Grasslands Fiend Intel 6: Voltaic Canine on your map and start the encounter. The second the battle starts, swap to Red XIII and start spamming his basic attack. The goal here is to fill up his ATB meter as quickly as possible. If you hold down the attack button, the character will start spinning and gaining energy quickly.

As soon as Red XIII’s ATB meter has filled up, press the “X” button to pause combat and switch to Tactical Mode. You will now want to click the Spells Menu and use “Bio” on Thunderclaw. This will apply a toxic spell to him, which will generate non-elemental damage to fill up his pressure bar.

With Bio applied to Thunderclaw, it’s now time to spam Red XIII’s basic attack on the creature again. If timed correctly, you should trigger pressure on Thunderclaw. You may need to restart the Fiend Intel and try this a couple of times to get it down. One of the biggest challenges here is not accidentally knocking the creature out before you get the objective cleared.

If you don’t have Poison Materia, you can still attempt this. Use Red XIII and unleash a flurry of basic attacks against Thunderclaw as soon as battle stars. Don’t let up on the creature and relentlessly pressure him until you get the status applied. However, from my playhtough, I was only able to get this to work by using the Poision Maeria Bio spell first.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on PlayStation 5.
