How to Play All Trails Games in Order

The Legend of Heroes franchise from Nihon Falcom, noted by every game in the Zemuria saga carrying a variant of the Trails sub-title, is a massive JRPG series and one well worth playing. But with so many games available, how do you know how to play all of the Trails games in the right order?

How to Play All The Legend of Heroes: Trails Games in Order

There are a couple of ways to play these games in order, but we are going to focus on the original chronological order, which is also how they were originally released. In my opinion as a long-time fan of this series, this is the best way to play all of the officially localized Trails games in order:

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
  • Trails in the Sky SC
  • Trails in the Sky the 3rd
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero
  • Trails to Azure
  • Trails of Cold Steel
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2
  • Trails of Cold Steel 3
  • Trails of Cold Steel 4
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak
  • Trails through Daybreak 2 (when it releases in 2025)

Should You Play in Localization Release Order?

The question some fans may have is whether or not to play all of the Trails games in the localization release order. This means playing the Cold Steel games before the Crossbell Saga (Zero and Azure). This is how I and many others played the games officially in English since they were released that way.

I didn’t mind this particular order, but the Cold Steel games, especially 3, spoil some of the best parts of the Crossbell Saga. I recommend going in the originally intended Japanese release order above. It will also allow you to experience the various gameplay changes and lore expansions as they happen naturally. When Trails in the Sky the 1st comes out, though, I think it might be worth playing that one first.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is available right now for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC.
