How to Perform a Limit Break in Final Fantasy XVI

As is common in Final Fantasy games, Clive can use a Limit Break in Final Fantasy XVI. He just… can’t do so right away. You need to get quite a bit into the game’s story before the ability unlocks. Once it does, however, you’ll be able to use this special burst of power whenever his gauges fill up.

When does Clive get his Limit Break in Final Fantasy XVI?

After Jill wakes up at Cid’s hideaway, you’ll get a chance to talk with her. She’ll suggest returning to where things all began: Rosaria. More specifically, Phoenix’s Gate. A series of storyline quests will ensue as Clive heads there with her and Torgal.

Once you finally reach Phoenix’s Gate, the trio will head into the Fallen ruins “shrine” that Joshua would have visited. Once you reach the deepest part, Clive will take part in the time honored RPG tradition of facing himself. As part of this story quest encounter, you’ll actually take part in the Final Fantasy XVI Limit Break tutorial.

Essentially, a gauge appears below Clive’s health bar from here on out. As long as he has at least one “bar,” you can press L3+R3 (both analog sticks) to kick off his Limit Break. This means he enters a powered up state. I recommend waiting for two bars, because one bar doesn’t provide enough time to properly deal proper damage. This gauge fills as you fight, though you can also pick up or buy a special potion at vendors like Charon to fill the gauge immediately.

Final Fantasy XVI is available for the PlayStation 5. There is a six-month exclusivity period.
