How to Open the Scary Dark Chest in World of Warcraft

In World of Warcraft: The War Within, players can discover hidden treasures throughout Khaz Algar, including the “Dark Scary Chest” in The Ringing Deeps. Successfully open the chest, and the adorable (?) Oop’lajax pet is yours — here’s how to do it.

The Scary Dark Chest is located in The Ringing Deeps at 58.94, 30.30. To find it, either use the map above or paste the following command if you’re using the TomTom AddOn:

  • /way #2214 58.94 30.30 Scary Dark Chest

Look for a sparkling purple chest surrounded by candles. It’s pretty hard to miss and will be marked on your minimap while the chest is active.

To open the Scary Dark Chest, you must light all ten surrounding candles by clicking on them. Once every candle is lit simultaneously, the chest loses its purple glow and can be opened.

Candles burn out quickly, so you’ll need to be quick to light each one. I found that the most efficient path is from left to right, prioritizing the larger candles. Players nearby can also help you out, so grab a friend if needed.

If you’re struggling to click the candles in time, I highly recommend enabling the Interact Key. Once enabled, the Interact Key (F by default) will automatically click any interactable object nearby when pressed.

To enable the Interact Key, follow these steps:

  • Press ESC to open the menu.
  • Click “Options.”
  • Tick “Enable Interact Key” under the “Controls” section

Why won’t the chest open?

Some players have reported a bug that prevents you from opening the Scary Dark Chest, even when every candle has been lit. Unfortunately, there is no known workaround for this bug, and you’ll need to come back to the chest later.

Though many players suggest that the “Janky Candles” quest is required to open the chest, I was able to open it on an alternative character without completing any quests in The Ringing Deeps. The “Janky’s Finest” movement buff can definitely help you out, though.

What’s in the Scary Dark Chest?

Opening the Scary Dark Chest rewards you with the Oop’lajax battle pet and some Resonance Crystals. Oop’lajax is an octopode with bright red eyes that follows you in a cute little bubble.

Oop’lajax has a unique interactive feature. It occasionally latches onto a nearby head and grants the “Face Grab” buff. A free pet that serves as an adorable (pulsating) hat is totally worth the effort, if you ask me.

If, for whatever reason, you don’t want Oop’lajax, you can Cage it and sell it on the Auction House. You monster. Unlike other “secret” pets, like Marmaduke, Oop’lajax isn’t unique, meaning you can grab multiples of this pet on your alts, too.

World of Warcraft and The War Within expansion are available on PC and Mac.
