How to Multiclass in Baldur’s Gate 3

One of the classic Dungeons & Dragons mechanics is multiclassing, where the player mixes together more than one class for a unique character build. Since Baldur’s Gate III is the latest in the D&D-set world, it also brings the feature back. While multiclassing was not available in the early access version of the game, it is an option for players in Baldur’s Gate III’s full release. With this, players are able to mix and match two distinct classes, such as Barbarian and Warlock.

How to Multiclass Your Character in BG3

First and foremost, you need to pick your starting class in Baldur’s Gate 3. Take your time with this and pick the class you think fits your character the best. You won’t be able to multiclass in Baldur’s Gate III until you are already in the game itself, so don’t worry about that in the character creator screen.

Usually after completing the tutorial prologue of the game on the Mindflayer ship, you have enough experience to level up for the first time. When this happens, you now have the option to multiclass for the first time.

During the level up screen, press the corresponding button at the bottom of the screen to “add class.” You need to do this on the first step of the level up screen. For players using a controller like myself or on PS5, you’ll want to press the X or Square button.

When you choose to add a class, you’ll go through the basic class selection screen again, much like in the character creator. There are almost no restrictions, either, allowing you to choose your subclass, spells, Cantrips, and the like. You can even multiclass with four, five, or even more classes if you wanted (though that isn’t recommended).

There is one limitation of multiclassing in Baldur’s Gate 3 you should know about, though. If you are playing on the easiest of the three difficulty options, you are unable to multiclass. However, there is a funny workaround for this. You can change your difficulty anytime, so you can pick a higher difficulty, level up, multiclass, and then switch back to the easier one right after.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC and will release for the PS5 on September 6, 2023.
