How to Make Gil in Final Fantasy XIV

Gil is the main currency in Final Fantasy games. You’ll need a lot of it if you plan on purchasing everything that catches your eye in an installment, especially in Final Fantasy XIV. Seriously, things can be expensive! Here are my favorite ways to make Gil in Final Fantasy XIV.

How do I make lots of Gil in Final Fantasy XIV?

Before I get into my favorite money-making techniques, there’s one thing you need to know: don’t expect to become a Gillionaire overnight. Turning a profit takes a lot of time and patience. While you might get lucky occasionally, you won’t be earning multi-million amounts of gil in Final Fantasy XIV in a single day.

Use the Market Board to your advantage

The easiest way to make Gil in FFXIV is by knowing how to work the Market Board. For example, in July 2022, the Ufiti Horn was available via the Moogle Treasure Trove event. Before the event, it sold for over 1 million Gil on the Market Board and quickly tanked to around 150,000. I stored mine in my Retainer, waited a year, and managed to sell it for almost a million Gil just a few days ago.

Another one of my favorite ways to use the Market Board is to snipe high-selling items for cheap and sell them for a higher price. Sometimes, you’ll find expensive items for over half of what they usually sell for because the seller wants to get rid of them quickly. There’s a substantial amount of luck with this method, but I’ve managed to make a few million Gil over the years by keeping an eye on what’s being listed for sale.

When selling an item, make sure you undercut the lowest price by at least one Gil. That way, you’ll be the cheapest option and the first pick when it comes to the buyer.

Send your Retainers out on Ventures

Once you’ve assigned a class to your Retainers, you can send them out on Ventures, AKA trips, to gather items. The higher their level and gear, the higher Ventures they can do, meaning better rewards for you to sell for profit.

You need a special currency (also called a Venture) to pay your Retainers to go and collect items for you. The easiest way to get more Ventures is by trading in Grand Company Seals at your Grand Company.

Use Aetheryte Tickets

When you teleport in FFXIV, you spend a small amount of Gil. And while it might not seem like much, it can add up to a lot over time, especially if you teleport often.

Instead of spending money, use Allied Seals obtained via Hunts to buy Aetheryte Tickets at a Hunt Billmaster. These are used in place of Gil when teleporting, so you’re not dipping into your wallet each time.

Don’t ignore your crafters and gatherers

If you have Disciples of the Hand and/or Land at max level, you’re in a prime spot to be making Gil in Final Fantasy XIV. Many players either don’t want to level them, or simply aren’t at a high enough level yet to craft and access many late-game materials, which often sell for a lot. Make use of your time between questing and dungeoning to check the Market Board and see what materials and items you can gather or craft for a good profit.

This is especially important after a patch because, oftentimes, players would rather spend their Gil on craftable and gatherable items rather than put in the work. I’m definitely guilty of this myself! Take advantage of this in the first few days after a patch launch, and you’re bound to bring in a ton of money.

Make use of your Timeworn Maps

While you may be tempted to sell any Timeworn Maps you come across while gathering, in some cases, you may actually benefit more from running them and opening the chest. It’s recommended that you group up whenever you do high-level Timeworn Maps because the enemies can become overwhelming, so use the Party Finder if necessary. In fact, the only marketed solo-able map is the Thavnair Saigaskin Map, but your mileage may vary.

Sometimes, upon opening a Timeworn Map chest, a mini-dungeon will unlock. Entering the portal that appears and completing the dungeon nets you even greater rewards, many of which can get you a decent profit on the Market Board.

If you’d prefer not to find Treasure Maps yourself, you can purchase them on the Market Board, but they often cost a pretty penny, so bear that in mind.
