How to Make a Japanese PS4 and PS5 Account

Gaming is so much more open and free than it was on older region-locked consoles like the PS3. You can make a Japanese PS4 and PS5 account right now, and immediately have access to exclusive games that are only available in that region.

If you want to make a Japanese PS4 and PS5 account, start by heading to where you make a new account on the PlayStation official website. The very first step that the account will ask you to do is select the country or region you want the account for.

In general, it should default to the location of your IP address, such as North America or Europe. However, you want to switch to Japan. The problem with this is that selecting this will immediately switch all of the website content to Japanese.

If you don’t happen to speak Japanese, I have your back with some steps below (or you can just use Google Translate in the moment):

  • After selecting Japanese, select the blue arrow (次へ or “next”) in the top right corner to continue
  • Now insert your date of birth in year, month, and day format
  • Pick your email address (use a fresh one not tied to an existing account), password, and then re-enter your password in that order in the three following boxes
  • Continue and then confirm your email address

From there, all you need to do is add new user on your PS4 and/or PS5. Sign in using the email address and password you just set up. From that point forward, you can switch to that Japanese account and peruse the Japanese PlayStation Store. This same Japanese PlayStation account works on both PS4 and PS5 consoles.

Japanese PlayStation Account Benefits

One of the best benefits of using a Japanese PlayStation account is being able to buy games that aren’t currently localized. I am currently playing through The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki this way. In addition, there are some worldwide releases you can get early by purchasing the Japanese release, such as Final Fantasy XVI.

The best part is you can switch to your North American or European account and play some of these games in English. Just make sure to buy some Japanese PSN cards from places like PlayAsia.
