Doshaguma is one of the first monsters we hunt in the Open Beta for Monster Hunter Wilds. It’s a bear-like pack hunter that roams the Windward Plains and specializes in raw strength and aggression. It could be a rough hunt for newer players, but if you get your head around his movements and his big claws, it puts a lot of the game’s new mechanics to use.
How do I hunt Doshaguma in the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta?
Setting out on this assignment is simple. There are two types of experiences in the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta. To hunt the Doshaguma, you select the “Doshaguma Hunt” in the menu. After that, you’ll head into this challenge.
First, remember to eat before you head out. Food buffs have always been important in Monster Hunter, and that is the case here as well. Even cooking just the standard meat in your Pop-up Camp or Base Camp gives your maximum health and stamina a sizable buff, which can make the difference in whether you survive a hit or can perform enough stamina-consuming attacks. There can also be other defensive buffs depending on the food you cook.
Take time to learn how the weapons work before you head out too. The Weapon Controls menu, under the Play Guide section, lets you see what moves a weapon has. It also notes how they connect and highlights unique properties.
Finally, take some time to prepare your inventory. Grab healing items, put together Shock or Pitfall Traps, and have other tools like Bombs or specific Slinger Pods. Dung Pods will be critical for this hunt.
Use Dung Pods on the pack
Doshaguma hunts in packs. Usually there are three of them, with the larger pack alpha being the target of the hunt. They can be a menace in groups, so separating them should be your first priority. One of the best ways to scatter them is to hit the smaller ones with Dung Pods from your Slinger to send them to other areas. This will keep the alpha Doshaguma with you. It makes it much easier both to dodge the attacks coming at you and to deal efficient damage since there is only one enemy to focus on.
Use the environment to your advantage
Like Monster Hunter World, the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta features environmental elements that can influence your Doshaguma hunt. These include things like the current weather and turf wars with other monsters. Lightning storms can sweep over the Windward Plains as you fight the beast, and with them come lightning strikes. These can do a decent bit of damage if you can lure the Doshaguma to them. In addition, Vine Traps and agitated Thunderbugs can be used to keep the monster still and not swinging at you for several seconds.
There are other kinds of environmental damage to consider. Overhanging rocks can be dropped on the Doshaguma to deal damage and topple the creature briefly as well. The Windward Plains location is also home to a number of other large monsters that can encounter your target and begin fighting them. The Balahara, the worm-like, sand drilling Leviathan, is one that can join in the fight.
The most potent enemy you can lure into a fight with the Doshaguma is the Rey Dau. It appears alongside lightning strikes here. This beast is the apex predator in the area and, while it can help you out in the hunt by dishing a large amount of lightning damage, it can be a lethal foe that will attack you too. Knowing when to lure one into the fight, then attack during their battle, is critical.
Hit Doshaguma’s arms and head when it is safe
The Doshaguma’s biggest weak points for blunt, cutting, and ranged weapons will be its arms and head. This is dangerous, as these are the most treacherous parts to stand near, especially if you use melee weapons that include shields. Most of the monster’s attacks are claw swipes or bites. Dodging to the left or right is helpful, since a lot of its heavier attacks charge forward. This makes backward dashes dangerous.
One of the Doshaguma’s strongest attacks is a large, two-stage slam that charges forward, then shatters the earth upward in front of it. The safest place to be when it happens is on the side of it or behind it. Using focus strikes on wounds you have created by repeatedly hitting monster parts can also stun the creature out of many of its attacks if done right.
Capturing can save time and recovery items
The minimap in the bottom left corner of the screen will let you know when a monster is tired, leaving, or near death, with a skull appearing by the creature when you are close to defeating it. When this happens, you could take advantage of the opportunity to capture it. This is when you put a near-death monster in a trap, then hit it with either a close-range Tranq Bomb or long-range Tranq Knife. This will bring the hunt to a close in less time than it would take to fight the monster to the bitter end. You won’t get to carve up the creature when you do this, but captures net you different bonus rewards in exchange for those typical parts.
Follow these steps, be patient, learn the Doshaguma’s attack patterns, and use every tool at your disposal. Do that, and you will take down this furry menace in no time.
