How to unlock Turtle Pets in Stardew Valley 1.6

For some odd reason, Stardew Valley 1.6 doesn’t let you have the turtle as the starter pet for your farm. You still have the default cat and dog options when starting a new save file. As such, the only way to get a turtle pet in Stardew Valley is if you obtain it as your second pet in the game, which is now possible with the 1.6 update. Once you are ready to get a turtle, head down to Marnie’s Ranch, which you can find south of your farm.

As you may remember, Marnie is the one who gives you your initial pet after earning 1,000 gold in the game. Here at her ranch when she is open, you will be able to purchase a turtle pet from her. There are two options at this time: one turtle for 60,000 gold and a purple one for a whopping 500,000 gold.

How to Get a Second Pet in Stardew Valley

Of course, you don’t have the option to adopt a turtle until you unlock a second pet. To do this, you have to keep filling your first pet’s water bowl and talking with them every single day to raise your relationship with them. You want to keep doing this until you reach the full five hearts, which you can check in the menus. Once this is accomplished, check your mail, and Marnie will send you a letter about adopting new pets.

At this point, you can do the above information and head to Marnie’s shop to adopt a turtle or any other second pet. In addition, you need to go to Robin’s carpenter shop in town and purchase a new water bowl for your second pet. This costs an additional 5,000 gold and 25 hardwood. But it is worth it for your second-ever pet companion.

Stardew Valley 1.6 is now available for PC. However, the update is to be released at a later date for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
