How to Get the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can recruit non-companion player characters to join your camp. That includes furry friends! One of these animal companions you can recruit in Baldur’s Gate 3 includes an Owlbear cub. However, getting the Owlbear cub to join your camp and become a permanent fixture will take time, patience, and a bit of animal cruelty.

How to Get the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3

There are several ways to go about getting an Owlbear cub in Baldur’s Gate 3, unfortunately all of which involve killing the cub’s mother. First, you will need to travel to the Owlbear Den, which can be found on the screenshot I shared below below. You can choose to step away from the mother Owlbear or completely disengage from the counter, but you will need to kill her. After doing so, you need to select the option to spare the Owlbear cub’s life, and it will promptly begin to feast on its mother’s corpse. Shadowheart will mention that you’ve doomed the cub to death, but don’t worry, as you’ll be able to recruit the little guy after completing a few steps.

The first way to get the Owlbear cub in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to find the cub in the Goblin Camp. There, you’ll find the goblins captured it. You can persuade the goblins to free the cub from their game of chicken, to which it will scamper off. After you’ve completed the Goblin Camp, either by killing everyone on the command of Halsin or by siding with them, you can return to the Goblin Camp to find the Owlbear cub there. It will run off, only for it to appear in your camp later.

Even if you’ve already completed the Goblin Camp and killed the Owlbear cub’s mother after the fact, the cub will still appear at your camp. The easiest way to learn how to coax the cub into staying is to have the Speak with Animals spell or potion. You can either cast this on the character you want to have interact with the cub or chug a potion. The cub will tell you that it’s hungry, so toss it some meat. Don’t let it eat from your hand, as Owlbears are vicious creatures and there could be some serious repercussion. The cub will run off again.

The third encounter with the Owlbear cub in Baldur’s Gate 3 will see it limp towards you, wounded. There are a total of three options you can pick to help the Owlbear cub, each dependent on a skill check. If you fail this skill check, it will run off. But if you succeed in aiding the Owlbear, it will return and become a permanent fixture of your camp.

Baldur’s Gate III is available for the PC and will release for PS5 on September 6, 2023.
