How to Get Epona in Tears of the Kingdom

Epona returns in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and is one of the game’s best mounts. If you are tired of running out of Stamina while traversing Hyrule, it’s worth trying to obtain the classic character. Plus, it just feels right to have Link reunited with his faithful steed. Here is how to get Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and it requires an amiibo.

How do I get Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Unlike other horses in the game, Epona isn’t obtainable in the overworld. The Tears of the Kingdom mount is instead tied to the amiibo feature unlocked during the Great Sky Island tutorial. To get Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you must own either the Twilight Princess or Super Smash Bros. Link amiibo. Before you start, don’t make the same mistake I did. Save your game! The amiibo rewards are random and have a once-a-day scan limit, so if you don’t get Epona, reload and try again.

To unlock Epona, open Link’s ability wheel and select the amiibo option. Hold your Link amiibo over your right Joy-Con stick to scan it when prompted. If you’re lucky, you will immediately see the majestic horse pop up into the world.

You won’t have to tame the creature, as Link will already be familiar with it and can hop right on. However, you must ride to the nearest stable to register it. Because of the character’s iconic status, you won’t be able to customize it. But then again Epona is perfect as-is, especially with the 4-star rating in Strength, Speed, and Stamina.

If you don’t want to use the The Legend of Zelda amiibo feature, you are in luck, as there is a second way to obtain the mount in Tears of the Kingdom. The horse will be unlocked for free and carried over if your Nintendo Switch has a Breath of the Wild save file with Epona on it.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
