How to Get Blue Pikmin in Pikmin 4

Your three base types of Pikmin in Pikmin 4 are Blue, Red, and Yellow. However, the Red and Yellow are the only two you really get as part of the “story.” You’ll encounter some wild Blue ones in caverns, but the best way to get a regular supply is from acquiring the Onion for them and adding them to your main lineup. However, while you’ll probably see that Onion once or twice while roaming around the first Sun-Speckled Terrace map, you won’t be able to get it until you’ve gotten some of the Flarlic Bulbs from Sun-Speckled Terrace and Blossoming Arcadia so you can have a large enough “army” of allies to retrieve it.

How to get the Blue Pikmin Onion in Pikmin 4

The best way to get Blue Pikmin in Pikmin 4 is by getting the blue Onion. This is in Sun-Speckled Terrace on the land mass past the small pond near the hose. However, you can’t immediately reach it and recover that. The Blue Onion needs 20 Pikmin to carry it. Since you’ll likely only have Red, Ice, and Yellow Pikmin before unlocking Blue, getting it back to base is tricky.

Basically, you need to collect Flarlic Bulbs until you can have 50 Pikmin with you at once. This is because you need 30 Ice Pikmin to freeze the water, then either 20 Red or Yellow Pikmin to dig up and retrieve the Blue Pikmin Onion in Pikmin 4. Yellow ones are better at digging, so I’d recommend going with them.

Once your Pikmin take that back to your base in the level, you unlock that type. As long as at least one is in your party, flowers in levels will include blue in their cycle of colors, so you can easily replenish that stock.

You can also get them in some caverns, with the earliest one being the Blossoming Arcadia cavern Secluded Courtyard. However, those numbers are more limited and getting the Blue Onion makes it much easier to build up a Blue Pikmin army.

Why do you want Blue Pikmin in Pikmin 4?

Blue Pikmin aren’t affected by water or water hazards. So they can swim, get items that are underwater, or carry things through water. They can also deal with enemies that spout water without taking damage or being phased. You can use them to clear the “traps” that involve water spouts or bubble blowers in the maps and caverns as well.

Also, Serene Shores is basically the Pikmin 4 equivalent of a water level, so I recommend you have about 50-60 ready for when you head there.

Pikmin 4 is available for the Nintendo Switch.
