One of the most fascinating parts about Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the different unlockable items you can use for the customizable Hideout. One of the more confusing parts about this system are the pets you can acquire in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which aren’t explained very well at all.

How to Get Pets
You are able to get pets through one main method and is the Sumi-e Paintings. These are paintings you are able to complete the in world as part of the optional content. You will note them by the little canvas and painter’s brush icon that appears on the map or whenever you are close to one of these.
You will then want to sneak up to them, preferably through crawling. Once you get close enough to the animal, you will be able to hold down the left trigger and observe the critter. This will show a cutscene of the protagonist painting the animals. As a reward, you will usually (but not always) get a painting and pet in the form of a fox and more.

How to Use Pets in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Once you have some pets unlocked in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, what you want to do is head back to the Hideout. The game does not explain this, but you can use the pets like decorations or furniture in a way. Select the “Improve Hideout” option here and you can tab over to the Pets tab. Here, you will find all pets you’ve located.
Then you can select each pet and place them anywhere in the Hideout. The location doesn’t matter, as the pets will just walk around the village at their leisure anyways. Some of the more common pets you find can also be placed multiple times in a row at the Hideout.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available right now for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
