How to Extract in Starship Troopers: Extermination

Starship Troopers: Extermination features different maps and missions for players to fight bugs in. After succeeding in their multiple objectives, players are given a final order on their missions: get to the extraction point and live to fight another day. Extraction rewards surviving players with experience based on how many of them escaped. The more people who make it off-world, the better your rewards at the end of the match. It’s in your best interest to make sure no one is left behind. To increase your chances of securing that tasty bonus experience, here’s a quick guide on how to extract in Starship Troopers: Extermination successfully.

Hold Your Position

There’s a small window of time between the extraction phase starting and the dropship actually revealing the rendezvous point on your HUD. During this time, it’s important to maintain your defensive position and keep taking down the bugs. Not only would leaving early mean losing out on valuable experience points, but you might end up heading in the complete opposite direction of the dropship’s eventual location. In your haste, you might forget to resupply at an ammo crate, and find yourself without enough ammo (or health) to survive the walk. More annoyingly, your early absence might leave part of the base undefended, allowing the enemy to swarm other players. Just be patient. Take this time to clear the area of bugs, restock your ammo, and regroup with your fellow players.

Wait for an Opening

The bugs will keep coming until everyone is dead or the dropship leaves. However, the base you’ve built with your teammates is still the safest place you could possibly be. Rather than make an immediate beeline towards the dropship through an infestation of bugs, wait for a lapse in their attack. This is usually when the fast, aggressive Tigers and ranged attackers like Gunners and Grenadiers have been taken out. Once the enemy’s assault weakens, grab some ammo and start running. If you’ve timed it right, you should be able to make it most of the way there without encountering anything particularly challenging to defeat. At the very least, you might get lucky and have the dropship spawn behind your base as opposed to behind the enemy. Waiting for an opening will ensure the base holds strong against the bug attacks long enough for you to make your escape undeterred.

Move as a Group

Your chances of survival in Starship Troopers: Extermination are exponentially increased when you work together with other players. Moving to the extraction point on your own while everyone else is busy fighting bugs seems like the right idea until you get squashed with no one around to revive you. What’s more, leaving your squad might endanger them as well. Your lone-wolf moment might negatively impact everyone- including you. Once extraction starts, keep an eye on the movements of the group. If you’re using voice chat, try to figure out when everyone should make a run for the dropship together. When that opening reveals itself, move as a group through the battlefield, taking out bugs as you go. As a group, you’ll have an easier time reviving any downed players, and have a higher survival rate.

Don’t Get Greedy

Once they’re safely within reach of the dropship, it’s common for players to farm experience points by killing as many bugs as they can before the timer runs out. This is actually the smart move: It keeps the extraction point free of enemies and clears the way for stragglers. Your line of sight is limited if you aren’t standing at the very edge of the dropship. Many players will stand at the bottom of the loading ramps to shoot the bugs. You can hang back inside the dropship until takeoff, but if you’re keen on farming, try to avoid getting greedy.

Stay near the ship so that other players can revive you easily. Losing two teammates is worse than one. Avoid reviving players who are too far away- unless you’re moving as a group to save them. Finally, don’t hold up the dropship for too long. Extra experience points are great, but so is ending the mission with the extraction bonus.  Once everyone else is on the ship, ditch the bug stomping and take a seat. Don’t risk getting downed with not enough time to spare for anyone to save you.

Extraction in Starship Troopers: Extermination might feel like a shot in the dark, but it doesn’t have to be. As long as you can coordinate with your team, watch each other’s backs, and have a little patience, you’ll be fine. Don’t let the timer scare you into making rash decisions. Focus on maximizing that extraction bonus, and avoid taking on more than you can handle. Follow the guide, and you’ll be extracting safely and consistently. Before you can get to extraction, you’ll have to survive the defense phase of the mission. For tips on how to build a solid base to protect yourself from bug bites, click here.
