Which Shell Should I Use Against the Duchess?

Before entering the Duchess’ chambers, go back and get the coconut shell from the courtyard. This shell has a super high defense stat, and its Umami Rollout is extremely powerful. This shell will give you a massive advantage in the fight against the Duchess.

The coconut shell can be found by leaving the castle out of the main corridor. It’s on the ground near a lobster enemy. Run back, get it, and run back into the castle without getting hit by the lobster. Be careful that it doesn’t follow you, though, because there’s a glitch where the lobster can appear in the boss battle and attack you.

If it does, open the menu and select Die Instantly. If you die while your shell is unbroken, you will respawn with it on. If the coconut shell breaks during the boss battle, pick up the pop can shell. Don’t pick up any other kind of shell, especially the teacup shell, because they will be too fragile to withstand the Duchess’ attacks.

How to Beat the Duchess in Another Crab’s Treasure

One of the Duchess’ main moves is where she swings her tea infuser (the thing you store loose tea leaves in) at you. She’ll trap you in it, and she’ll smash you into something. Unlike a lot of boss’ main moves, this one won’t kill you instantly or deal a huge amount of damage. It’s more for getting you close enough to her for her to do follow-up moves.

Avoid Her Ball and Chain Attack

The follow-up moves are pretty easy to avoid by just running away, but her tea infuser is more difficult to avoid. It has an extremely long reach and has a somewhat inconsistent AoE. You can try running away, but it’s a gable whether she’ll actually catch you or not.

What to Do When The Duchess Spits Gunk

The Duchess’ other primary move is her Gunk attack. She will throw up a bunch of Gunk over the battle stage, creating obstacles. Gunk is a poisonous substance. When you walk into Gunk, a poison meter will pop up.

If you max out your poison meter, your HP will start whittling down. This will stop either when you’re dead or a few seconds after you’ve cleaned up your poisoned meter. You’ll want to avoid the Gunk at all costs because it can very easily put you in dire strats.

When to Attack the Duchess

The Duchess is extremely slow. If you watch her movement and think you might have a safe window of opportunity to attack, take it. Once you are able to get a sense of her movements, it’s really easy to just weave in and out of range. The easiest and fastest way to beat the Dutchess is with the coconut shell.

If you have the coconut shell on, you can use its Umami skill, Rollout, to dodge the Dutchess’ attacks by using it right before she’s about to hit you. It’ll also knock you away from her at the end. You’ll be far enough away to run if she’s following up or to get a few more hits in if you have time.

The Duchess is so slow that if you need to heal, all you need to do is run away. If she’s spitting up a lot of Gunk, that means that she’s entering a window of time where she won’t be focusing on attacking you. During this time, just run away from her and the Gunk, and you’ll have plenty of time to heal. If you need to switch shells, this is also a great time to do it.
