Despite its sci-fi setting, XCX has a fairly traditional class system: except instead of fighters and mages you have Partisan Eagles and Full Metal Jaguars. These classes can learn a wide array of skills and wield strange new weapons, so here’s how to Change Classes in both Xenoblade Chronicles X and the newly released Definitive Edition.
How to Unlock and Change into a New Class in Xenoblade Chronicles X
To first unlock the ability to change class, you’ll need to reach Rank 10 in the base class, Drifter. You can do this fairly early by simply grinding the various indigens you’ll come across while exploring Mira, potentially even before clearing the prologue. Upon reaching the max level you’ll receive a pop up informing you of the option, and you can then go into your menu, select Party and then Class to view the Class Menu.
From the Class Menu you can view all of the available classes and even their learnable skills and Arts. After maxing the Drifter class you’ll have the option of moving into the Commando, Striker, and Enforcer trees, and then moving further up those trees after you max that class. You aren’t locked in to your choices either, as you can freely switch between class you have already unlocked.

After changing class, it’s a good idea to look over your equipment since each class can only use specific weapons. However, once you master a Level 4 class, like the Duelist or Astral Crusader, you’ll master that class’s weapons and be able to use them with any other class you wish. This opens up a lot of customization options, like mixing and matching your favorite weapons and Arts across classes.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is immediately available for Nintendo Switch. The original game is available on Wii U.
