How to Beat Smog in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Smog is one of the recurring extra boss fights you can encounter in the latest The Legend of Zelda game. You can fight this foe two times in two different locations, thanks to two sidequests, and each fight involves similar mechanics. Fortunately, once you have beaten Smog once, it is easier to understand how to defeat the enemy again. Here’s how to beat Smog both times in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

How to beat Smog in “Let’s Play a Game” in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Hyrule Field Eastern Temple

The first fight against Smog happens east of Hyrule Castle Town in a location known as the Eastern Temple. It is considered the Hyrule Field area. This happens during the “Let’s Play a Game” side quest, which you trigger by speaking to an NPC outside the place. You need to complete a short mini-dungeon to reach the Smog boss. This involves using the Sparks enemies inside, or echoes of them, to turn on switches to open a few doors.

Here’s where you’ll find Smog the first time in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom:

The actual Smog fight involves the boss eventually spreading cloud parts of itself all over the arena. You need to basically corral the parts so Smog becomes whole again. This means using the rocks around the area, as well as echoes of them, to try and get the boss and any stray parts in the same area so they combine again.

Here’s an example of how to corral Smog:

While this is going on, though, Smog and his parts will periodically damage you with lightning strikes so be careful. Each time the character is a whole, full cloud, you can actually start battling and defeating it. The simplest ways I found to defeat Smog are with bombs, either via Bombfish or actual Swordfighter Form ones. (A Sword Moblin Lv 2 or 3 or Lynel will also help!) You’ll get the Ancient Charm accessory as a reward, which ensures you take less damage from enemy attacks.

How to Beat Smog in Faron Wetlands in Echoes of Wisdom

The second time you meet Smog in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is during the “Cotton-Candy Hunt” side quest, which you take from some Deku Scrubs in Scrubton after repairing the Faron Wetlands rift. This mission takes you to the Hidden Ruins. As before, there is a brief dungeon to complete before facing Smog.

Here’s where you find the second Smog fight for “Cotton-Candy Hunt” in Faron Wetlands. Note to unlock the location, you first need to defeat the Dripitune so it stops raining. Then, use fire to ensure the two torches nearby are lit.

The boss fight with Smog here is essentially the same. You need up his parts and then defeat him with a bomb or enemies like a Sword Moblin Lv 2 or Lynel. The catch this time is that it is a 2D fight. So you still need to block Smog in and reunite the smaller parts, but dodge lightning attacks in 2D and place blocks more vertically. I recommend herding the parts into corners to force them to reunite.

As a reward for defeating this boss a second time, you will earn yourself the Curious Charm accessory. This particular accessory is just like the Ancient Charm, except its damage reduction trait is even more powerful, which makes this worth getting as soon as possible. It’s very handy for the final boss fight!

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is available right now exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
