Dragon’s Dogma is a single player game, but Capcom are including a social feature to try and foster communication between players: pawn sharing. Pawns in Dragon’s Dogma are your AI teammates, who can develop their abilities based on traits they learn from you and your actions.

These pawns can be shared with other players. When you share a pawn with another player, your pawn will go into their game, complete with the knowledge it has built up from its experiences with you. So, for example, if your pawn is experienced against a particular kind of monster, it’ll retain that experience and put it to use to help your friend, should the need arise.

Sharing pawns is beneficial because they return with treasure and new knowledge, and with Rift Crystals, currency that lets you hire even stronger pawns.
