With the recent release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, GameFreak introduced a total of 103 new Pokemon. That’s quite a lot, for a game that’s already teeming with classics from generations past. So now with the addition of those 100 Paldean Pokemon, just how many Pocket Monsters are in the entire franchise?
As of November 2022, there are 1008 species of Pokemon in the series. That does not mean all of them are available to catch in Scarlet or Violet, of course. This number does not count those with different forms and types as a separate entry. For example, Vulpix and Alolan Vulpix count as one. With that said, let’s look at a break-down of how many Pokemon are in each region and generation.
Kanto (Generation I): 151
Johto (Generation II): 100
Hoenn (Generation III): 135
Sinnoh (Generation IV): 107
Unova (Generation V): 156
Kalos (Generation VI): 72
Alola (Generation VII): 86
Galar (Generation VIII): 89
Hisui (Generation VIII): 7
Paldea (Generation IX): 103
The exact number of new Pokemon per generation is slightly incorrect in the above list. In Generation VII, GameFreak introduced Meltan and Melmetal in the Let’s Go spin-off games. However, those two are from Kanto and not Alola.
New additions in Generation IX so far include Cetoddle, Rellor, and Tandemaus.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available for the Nintendo Switch worldwide.
