When the original Dragon Quest III first released, one of the biggest new features it brought to the series was the vocation system. You can assemble your party of choice right from the beginning of the game. That isn’t the end of the customization, though. Where can you change vocations in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?

If you want to change vocations, you’ll need to visit the Alltrades Abbey. You won’t have access to it until the King of Portoga gives you the letter that allows you to pass through Nordy’s Grotto east of Asham. Once you’re through, make your way to the city of Baharata. To reach the Alltrades Abbey from here, go over the bridge to the east and then head north.

How can you change vocations in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?

There are a few stipulations for making a vocation change. First of all, it’s not open to your Hero. They’re already the Hero! As for your other party members, they’ll need to be at level 20 or higher in their current vocation to make the change. If they’ve met that qualification, simply talk to the Abbot of Alltrades Abbey on the main floor. Choose the character whose vocation you want to change, and you’re on your way.

What should you know before changing vocations?

While changing vocations is exciting, especially the first time you do it, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the character changing vocation will be returned to level one with all of their stats reduced by half. It won’t take long for them to catch up again, but your party will be weakened until they do. Because of this, it’s a good idea to stagger your vocation changes among party members. Change one, level them up a bit, then change another character’s vocation.

Characters who change vocations will keep access to all of their abilities and magic from their previous vocations. They will not learn any new abilities or magic spells associated with those vocations, however. This is important to keep in mind, as some very good skills can be learned after level 20. You might not want to change vocations immediately. You can change vocations as often as you’d like, so you can make some very fun combinations.

After changing vocation, the game will automatically try to equip the character with vocation-appropriate gear from your bag. Vocation changes almost always mean equipment changes, so it’s not a bad idea to keep basic sets of gear in your bag. That way newly-changed characters have something to use until you can do some specific shopping and item-swapping.

If you search on either side of the Abbey just outside its walls, you’ll find two useful NPCs that will let you make changes of a different sort. The Servent of Appello will allow you to rename your characters, while Healizah can make changes to their appearances or voices.
