Time magazine included FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki among the 100 most influential people of 2023. With this announcement, the Dark Souls creator joins a group of notable celebrities globally recognized for their significant achievements. This marks the second time a Japanese video game developer made it to the list, following Shigeru Miyamoto’s inclusion in 2007.
Every year, Time magazine publishes a list of 100 people selected by its editors. They belong to many fields, from politics and sports to technology and culture. The selection criterion is to include people who have made significant contributions to the world in some way.
The “Innovators” group for 2023 lists FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki alongside Disney CEO Bob Iger, French soccer player Kylian Mbappé, and Nigerian researcher Dimie Ogoina. The latter is famous for his research on monkeypox and its treatment.
Miyazaki’s entry on the list includes a brief introduction written by The Last of Us Director Neil Druckmann, in which he explained the importance of his recognition. Druckmann shared his experience with FromSoftware’s games and praises the developer’s creativity when it comes to game design.
In addition, Druckmann also pointed to Elden Ring as “a great ambassador for video games” and stated that it is an example of why it is impossible for any other medium to recreate the same experiences. Indeed, Elden Ring has been positively received worldwide, to the point of surpassing the 20 million sales milestone across all platforms.
Elden Ring is currently available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox X/S series, and Xbox One worldwide.
