Khara’s press release revealed that the studio has earned consent and privilege to produce the new anime from the Space Battleship Yamato rights holders Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation. Khara is working on the project’s plans as of this announcement, and it aims to begin the show’s production in 2025.

The press release added that the new Star Blazers anime show by Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara will take a different path from the ongoing remakes. Xebec’s successor Studio Mother released the first episode of Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 in Japanese theaters in July 2024. This title will consist of seven films, and the studio will release the second episode on November 22, 2024.

Space Battleship Yamato originally appeared as a TV anime series by Leiji Matsumoto that first aired in Japan in October 1974. The franchise is also known in the US by its localized title Star Blazers. Xebec gradually released remakes of the classic anime series, starting with Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 in 2013. Bandai Namco included the latter in the 2017 crossover game Super Robot Wars V, which is available in Japan and Asia on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Studio Khara will start producing its own Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato anime show in 2025.
