Something interesting in a technical sort of way happened. We now have a better idea of how Sony plays to market the PlayStation 5. That’s because, with a bit PlayStation Blog hype, the company shared the first global PS5 commercial.
The spot, called “PlayStation 5—Play Has No Limits,” features footage of a woman in different locations as she deals with a tentacled creature from unsettling waters, a warzone, and unsettling beings in a cave. The 1:14 ad then brings up the system’s 3D audio, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback, implying that all of those potential game scenarios felt more “real” as a result.
Here’s the first PS5 commercial. (The system itself doesn’t show up until the 1:08 mark.)
As a reminder, the DualSense controller is designed to give different sorts of feedback based on in-game actions. (Think of it as being somewhat similar to the Nintendo Switch Joy—Con’s HD rumble feature.) The triggers on the controller also provide adaptive feedback, with people able to feel things like recoil and use the sensations to help them in-game.
The PlayStation 5 is set to be released before 2020 ends, though Sony hasn’t announced an official date for its launch yet. The company has promised it will alert people before pre-orders for the system open.
