2020 was a big year for video games, and Twitter shared data to show what people talked about the most. From Animal Crossing: New Horizons to Genshin Impact, there were a lot of discussions about gaming that went on via the social network. To give you an idea of just how many people talked about gaming, there were over two billion tweets total during the year.
It comes as no surprise to see Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the game that people talked about the most in 2020. After starting out hot in the year, it managed to maintain the top spot since the mid-2020 report. Meanwhile, Fate/Grand Order, which was first for the past two years, was the runner-up. Fortnite and Final Fantasy, which were respectively second and third in 2019, dropped to the fifth and fourth places. This also marks the first time that Minecraft, Super Smash Bros., and Granblue Fantasy missed out on top-10 spots.

While two billion Tweets were indeed a lot, they wasn’t enough to make gaming the most discussed topic in the year. Gaming ranked sixth out of all the categories that people discussed the most in 2020. “Gaming” is a pretty broad term, so here are the topics within the category that people tweeted about the most:

When it comes to people in countries that tweeted the most about gaming, Japan, United States, and Korea retained the top three spots for the second year in a row. However, most of the countries in the list are the same as last year’s, apart from India. It made its top-10 debut in 2020:

While 2020 was riddled with canceled events, several major gaming events took to the Internet. The biggest gaming event of them all, E3, was canceled due to the pandemic, but other events stepped it up online. Here are the top-five most tweeted gaming events from the year:

Esports also took a hit, with numerous in-person events and tournaments canceled due to the pandemic as well. This included the long-running Evolution Championship Series. The top-five most talked about Esports events of 2020 are as follows:
