Good Smile Company announced that it won’t be going through with the proposed changes to the Nendoroid and Nendoroid Basic box designs. However, there will be some Nendoroids that’ll come out later using the new box designs, as they’re already in production.
On October 25, 2024, Good Smile Company announced that it would release its Nendoroid and Nendoroid Basic figures in new boxes that don’t have any pictures or plastic covering on them. The plastic cover serves as a window so people can look inside the box to see both the figure and optional parts. As well, the pictures on the box show the various poses you can have the Nendoroid strike. This change reduced the plastic consumption of each box by up to 84%.
However, many fans did not appreciate this change. Some stated that the new box design makes it impossible to look inside. This is a way to make sure that you didn’t buy a bootleg figure, as well as to display the Nendoroid (as some collectors don’t take their figures out of the box). Other fans appreciated this decision due to environmental issues. According to Good Smile Company’s announcement, feedback from fans caused it to internally reassess the Nendoroid brand and what it means to people.
Twelve Nendoroids coming out will retain the proposed box design change, though. These Nendoroids are: Makise Kurisu 2.0, Chino: Winter Uniform, Haruka Sakura, Taiga Aisaka 2.0, Yoko 2.0, Koko Hekmatyar, RITA, Verdandi, DOUG, Albedo: Dress Version, Dark Hero Momon, Hana, and Kano Yamanouchi [Basic].
In the future, Good Smile Company will continue to package its Nendoroids in the original boxes.
