Golden Kamuy follows the story of Saichi Sugimoto, who is looking for Ainu treasure. In order to find the gold, he has to follow a map of tattoos. The story focuses on Ainu culture and language, and takes place after the Russo-Japanese War. Satoru Noda, the manga artist, has Hiroshi Nakagawa of Chiba University helping him as a language consultant. It is unknown if Nakagawa or someone else will also consult for the Golden Kamuy live-action movie.

Aside from Golden Kamuy, other live-action adaptations of shonen manga series are in development. For example, One Piece started filming in February 2022. The series will appear on Netflix, and the anime version is available on Crunchyroll and Funimation. A live-action series for Yu Yu Hakusho will also air on Netflix in December 2023.

The live-action Golden Kamuy movie is in development. More information on its cast and release date will come out in the future.
