The PlayStation Blog has announced a way people can enjoy a element of the new God of War before getting the game. The 21-track soundtrack is now available on Spotify.
God of War’s soundtrack is composed by Bear McCreary, who also did the soundtracks for Moon Breakers, Dark Void, Defiance, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate: Jack the Ripper and The Walking Dead TV series. When writing about the music for the PlayStation Blog, McCreary noted he was a fan of the original God of War games and wrote music for this one that was inspired by the original, only with a Norse age twist.
McCreary notes “Memories of Mother” is both the first and most meaningful song on the soundtrack, and that it was originally written for Kratos himself. He notes that he began working on musical sketches for a prototype of God of War four years ago, with many songs based on an early take of “Memories of Mother.” The original variation was considered “too sad and lyrical to represent Kratos,” which led to the creation of a new theme that appeared at E3 2016. It was later that McCreary came back, realized a theme was needed for Atreus’ mother, came back to “Memories of Mother” and wove it into the soundtrack.
God of War will be available for the PlayStation 4 on April 20, 2018.
