Twitter released an list of the most tweeted video games, influencers, events, and esports outfits of 2021, and Genshin Impact took top spot. It was followed by the battle royale Apex Legends and Ensemble Stars. Meanwhile, 2020 heavy hitters like Animal Crossing and Fortnite fell slightly in the rankings.
According to Twitter, there were an estimated 2.4 billion tweets about gaming in 2021. This is a 14% increase compared to 2020. Q4 2021 was reportedly the biggest quarter for video gaming conversations on the social media platform. Specifically, Twitter highlighted conversations around NFTs, new game releases, and in-person esports events as the main drivers.
In terms of video game titles, there were a few that stood out in 2021. Notably, Genshin Impact climbed from eighth place in 2020 to the top spot in 2021 on Twitter. Similarly, EA’s battle royale title Apex Legends went from ninth place to the runner-up. Ensemble Stars went from sixth to third place. While games like Minecraft managed to climb back into the top ten, Disney: Twisted-Wonderland and Identity V did not make it in the list. Other titles like Final Fantasy, Fate/Grand Order, and Knives Out continued to maintain their popularity.
