Final Fantasy XVI Announced for PlayStation 5 and PC (Update)

There were rumors leading up to the September 16, 2020 PlayStation 5 Showcase that Square Enix could show off the next Final Fantasy game there. Well, the company did. Final Fantasy XVI is in development and will appear as a PlayStation console exclusive and will be on the PC. It will be a PlayStation console exclusive. Update: While the trailer from the stream said PlayStation 5 and PC, the press release and official trailer uploaded by Square Enix don’t mention it.

There was a lengthy trailer to reveal it. We see a young prince, named Joshua, who appears to transform. There’s also his Shield, which will . There’s also talk of a blight and Mother Crystals protecting from it, as well as warriors using icons to fight. Summons like Ifrit, Shiva, and Phoenix both seem to appear. 

As for current Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy VII Remake is available on the PlayStation 4, with the exclusivity embargo up in April 2021. Final Fantasy XIV is also going strong, with 5.3 Reflections in Crystal recently released in August 2020.

Final Fantasy XVI is in development for the PlayStation 5. A PC version was mentioned in the trailer that appeared during Sony’s PlayStation 5 Showcase, but Square Enix later removed mentions of another version of the game.
