Housing is the ability for a Free Company (guild) to purchase a plot of land and then build a house over it for its members to share and use as a base of operations. Land in Final Fantasy XIV is sold through auctions. Once youā€™ve purchased a plot of land, you can then purchase a house permit to build your house.

Houses consist of four parts in the gameā€”the roof, the exterior wall, windows and door. You can decorate a number of these with optional parts. More importantly, youā€™ll also be able to decorate the interior of your house. Each houseā€™s wallpaper, flooring and lighting can be changed, and you can also place furniture as per your liking. Furniture includes everything from tables and lamps to carpets and plants.

In the future, Square Enix plan to make a number of further improvements to the housing system in the game. Future updates will allow one to build a crafting workshop where players can build vehicles such as airships or a Chocobo stable to raise chocobos. You can read about the housing system in more detail here.

Patch 2.1 for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is scheduled for release on December 17th.
