In an interview with Famitsu, Director and Producer of Final Fantasy XIV, Naoki Yoshida disclosed that the upcoming Shadowbringers 5.4 patch will be the largest content update patch yet. While a release date hasn’t been decided as of yet, Patch 5.4 is expected to arrive sometime in early December, and with it a plethora of new content. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

In the interview with Famitsu, Yoshida said that “..Patch 5.4 has an unusual volume of content,” and went on to use the number of battle sounds for the upcoming patch as an example.

For reference, the total number of VFX used for battle gimmicks for an expansion is around 1,000. That means there are around 1,000 types of sounds for battle gimmicks, for example. However, this time it isn’t an expansion and despite the usual updates the sound team is making around 600 sounds only related to battle gimmicks.

Yoshida goes on to mention that other members from various Square Enix sound staff have assisted Sound Director for Final Fantasy XIV, Masayoshi Soken, on the development of the patch.

Additionally, Yoshida discusses the general storyline for Final Fantasy XIV, mentioning that while patch 5.3 wrapped up certain aspects and elements of the Ascian storyline, there are still mysteries that have not been entirely solved. He mentions the question of who is Hydaelyn and what has happened to Zodiark as key elements that have yet to be resolved in the storyline itself.

The interview discusses the upcoming conclusion to the Eden’s Verse raid in the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV Patch 5.4. Additionally, he briefly discusses the Save the Queen relic weapon questline that will continue with patch 5.45. While a release date for that patch hasn’t been confirmed, Yoshida aims to release that patch two months after 5.4 launches.

Final Fantasy XIV is immediately available for PC, PlayStation 4 and has been confirmed for backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 5. Check out the latest screenshots and details, including a look at the “Emerald Weapon” of Final Fantasy XIV, here.
