Square Enix issued a reminder about the security measures needed to deal with FFXIV Software Authenticator and Token removal in case someone loses access to their phone or app, which included a walk through the Emergency Removal Password process. As the guides tell us, the process is essentially about being proactive and ensuring you have that extra password saved somewhere in the event you do lose access to devices, so you can then head to a specific site to regain access to your account.
The site people should visit prior to anything going awry is the Square Enix Account page. You can check your Token Usage Status there. On this page you can check your Square Enix ID for FFXIV, see if you have a Security Token registered to a Software Authenticator and device, and find your Emergency Removal Password.
The second part of this process is the actual Software Token Emergency Removal site. This requires you to know your account ID, the password for it, and the Emergency Removal Password. Filling in that information then sends an email to you that allows you to remove prior tools and the set a new one.
If you do or once did play FFXIV, you probably also received an email about when Square Enix shared an update on the Software Authenticator and Token Emergency Removal Password. Said email featured the subject “[Square Enix Account] Please make a note of your Emergency Removal Password.” Like the announcement on the Lodestone site, it went over what it is, shared how to find it, and explained how it helps with access and recovery.
Final Fantasy XIVis available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
