Strings of text for SNES titles have been datamined from the data for NES Online, the NES game emulator portion of Nintendo’s online service, which indicates that we may be seeing the addition of SNES titles in the near future. [Thanks, Kapu on Twitter!]
It seems that the text was added in Japanese during the most recent update for the application, and the following games are mentioned:
- Super Mario World
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Soccer
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Demon’s Crest
- Yoshi’s Island
- Stunt Race FX
- Kirby’s Dream Course
- Kirby Super Star
- Kirby’s Dreamland 3
- Pop’n’ Twinbee
- Star Fox
- Star Fox 2
- Contra III
- Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
- Super Metroid
- F-Zero
- Super Punch-Out!!
- The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
- Super Mario All-Stars
- Breath of Fire 2
Interestingly, a lot of the titles included are also available for the SNES Classic Edition, which released two years ago. These include Contra III, Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, and the previously-exclusive Star Fox 2. Kirby’s Dream Course is also described in the text strings in Japanese despite being exclusive to NA/PAL region SNES Classics, so previous regional differences may not matter this time around.
Apart from the above titles, a total of four emulator types have been found in the data for the NES Online program by SnowmealDome on Twitter. ‘Kachikachi’ is the same emulator used for the NES Classic and is being used currently for the NES titles, while an update added ‘Canoe’ (the emulator used for the SNES Classic) as well as ‘Hiyoko’ and ‘Count’, two other emulators that are currently unknown. This suggests that titles from two other consoles may hit the Nintendo Switch sometime.
The NES Online service is available via Nintendo Switch Online on the Nintendo Switch.
