The Shibuya Tourism Association, Shibuya Mirai Design, AU 5G, and Japanese telecommunications company KDDI will be bringing the world of Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 to our world with the Unlimited Reality experience. The idea is to encourages fans to stay home with the franchise. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
The Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 Unlimited Reality event was planned as a live experience that would be held in Shibuya, Japan. However, due to the effects and shelter-in-place orders caused by COVID-19, the event has been moved online. For a limited time, people will be able to enjoy new original stories made specifically for this event from the comfort and safety of home.
The Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 Unlimited Reality project includes social media activities, contests, apps, and videos, all set in the show’s cyberpunk world. One of the biggest parts of the project is the Mixed Reality Mission, which is a 360 degree VR mission. This can be experienced via Youtube with your smartphone. You can also enjoy the mission using a VR headset, though that’s not necessary. English subtitles are available.
There is also an online scavenger hunt that’ll take place across Twitter. During the hunt, six different Twitter accounts will share AR pages where you can take a picture of the Section 9 members. If you can collect all of the images and share them using the hashtag #公安9課メンバーを集めろ, you’ll be entered to win a limited edition <Ghost in the Shell shirt from Japanese fashion brand F-LAGSTUF-F.

A “Public Security Section 9” Instagram filter has been released and will let you look like various characters from Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045, including Major Kusanagi, Batou, and Aramaki. There’s a contest and prize for this too. 1,000 participants will be selected to receive a special set of CYMK posters that, when stacked together, make the Unlimited Reality project’s promotional image of Major Kusanagi.
Finally, fans will be able to bring a Tachikoma into the real world using VR. Originally, this experience was also planned as part of the Shibuya experience. In order to get a virtual Tachikoma, you’ll need the STYLY VR app, which you can download for Android and Apple iOS devices.
Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 is now available globally on Netflix.
