In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign Director Junya Ishizaki said there will be no crossplay multiplayer for the new cross-platform co-op game. However, like the original Elden Ring that it is based upon, there is cross-generation compatibility. [Thanks, IGN!]
There were no deep explanations about how and why FromSoftware made decisions about how multiplayer would work in the cross-platform game Elden Ring Nightreign, so we don’t know why there’s no cross-play. Ishizaki’s response to IGN’s Wesley Yin-Poole was relatively simple. He stated, “Similar to the original Elden Ring, there will be cross-generational play but not cross-platform play. So PS4 players can play with PS5 players, and Xbox One players can play with Xbox Series S and X players, but not between platforms.” Since this installment will be on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, it means PS4 and PS5 folks can play together, as can Xbox One and Xbox Series X players.
We will have an opportunity to see how that will may work out ahead of launch. Bandai Namco announced there will be a closed Network test for the game. That will be held in February 2025. In January 2025, we’ll get a chance to register to participate in that.
Elden Ring: Nightreign will come to the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2025. Elden Ring is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is also available now.
