D3 Publisher and Sandlot are giving Earth Defense Force 2025 a significant upgrade from its budget roots by adding full online play. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has an online cooperative mode that supports up to four players.

Famitsu explains one player acts as the host and creates a room with a lobby. Other players can join in, but online mission mode has restrictions on what kind of gear you can use. There is an armor limit and a weapon level limit so you can’t run into every mission with the Genocide Gun (that’s an actual weapon from Earth Defense Force 2017). There is a way to remove the limit through player progression.

Similar to other cooperative shooters, you can revive fallen team members when their armor drops to zero by doing a series of button inputs. However, their vitals will be the same and if their vitals are less than 25% you can’t resuscitate them. Earth Defense Force 2025 lets players communicate through text chat and gestures. You can cycle through canned messages or use free text to shout for help.

You can also change the color of your armor so you can stand out from all of the other Wing Divers. Earth Defense Force 2025 is scheduled to come out in Japan on July 4. D3 Publisher confirmed the game for a Western release, but have not set a date.
