Horii states that it was an honor to be the recipient of the award, and that not even 40 years ago that games were viewed as being responsible for crime and looked down on. He goes on to say that this attitude has changed, as games have been recognized as a part of Japanese pop culture and that he is deeply moved by the continued support of the games industry.

As mentioned previously, Yuji Horii is the creator of the Dragon Quest series. He has, in some capacity, been involved in the release of every mainline title. While serving as General Director of the series, he is additionally credited with writing the scenario for the likes of Dragon Quest XI, and the upcoming Dragon Quest XII.

In May 2024, Horii himself shared and update concerning the state of Dragon Quest XII and how he believes it will honor two members of the core team that passed.

Dragon Quest XII is currently in development for as yet unspecified platforms.
