Dragon QuestĀ series creator Yuji Horii shared a year-end message where he made a brief mention ofĀ Dragon Quest XII.
We still haven’t heard much about the newĀ Dragon QuestĀ entry, but back in June of 2019 it was mentioned that Square Enix was making preparations.

“Happy new year. There’s a lot more that I couldn’t say in the message below, but as for Dragon Quest XIIĀ it is still a ways away. However, there might be something we can announce before that. Please continue supporting us this year, too.”
Happy new year. Last year we started with the movieĀ Dragon Quest Your Story, then releasedĀ Dragon Quest XI‘s Switch version. We also launchedĀ Dragon Quest WalkĀ for smartphones, announced both an anime and game forĀ Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. As for the production ofĀ Dragon Quest XII, it’s been 33 years sinceĀ Dragon Quest IĀ and I’m very happy to be able to take on a new challenge like this today. I am truly grateful for all of the fans that continued supportingĀ Dragon QuestĀ and all the staff that kept it going. I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to keep going, but I do hope to keep doing my best for a little while longer. Let this year be a wonderful year for you all, and I hope to see your support this year as well.
