Square Enix has opened up pre-orders for Tarot cards and hanafuda cards based on Dragon Quest. These are exclusive to the Japanese Square Enix store, which means that those outside of Japan will need to find a proxy service of some kind to import them.
The Dragon Quest Tarot cards cost 2200 JPY ($14) and will ship out on June 30, 2024. As a purchase bonus, the Tarot cards come with a code that you can use in Dragon Quest X. This code will give you a Tarot Medal and Tarot card paintings that you can use to decorate your house. These Tarot cards look more like collector’s items or hobbyists, as the art for the cards lacks a lot of symbols and motifs that are present on traditional decks.
The Dragon Quest Hanafuda cards cost 3300 JPY ($20.95) and will come out on September 29, 2024. You can actually use them to play Hanafuda, or you can keep them around as something to display. All of the cards feature classic monsters from the series, and Slimes, of course, appear the most. They still incorporate the Japanese imagery present on a traditional Hanafuda deck.
The Dragon Quest Tarot and Hanafuda cards are open for pre-order via the Japanese Square Enix store. The latest entry to the series, Dragon Quest XII, is still in development.
